DAA To Provide Homes in New Program
Wednesday, April 21, 2010
Delaware Apartment Association charitable committee, “CARING FIRST” is developing a $25,000 grant for transitional housing program. The Delaware Apartment Association (DAA) is proud to announce the preliminary details of a new transitional housing program. The “APARTMENT ANGELS” transitional housing program is currently being developed by the DAA “CARING FIRST” charitable committee. The objective of the program is to donate funding of approximately $25,000 to provide five apartment homes to individuals or families in financial need. Individuals that participate in the program will be given possession of an apartment home for six months and will not be required to pay any rent. The launching of this program is targeted for summer 2010. Apartment communities provide the ideal home to many people. Unfortunately, the current economic difficulties our nation is facing have created incredible adversity for many families. Lost in the media frenzy regarding home foreclosures is the fact that many renters are also losing their homes. “The DAA maintains an intense interest in philanthropic endeavors. As the largest and most recognizable trade association for rental housing in the state of Delaware, developing a charitable program of transitional housing for individuals in need just made sense,” states Kevin Wolfgang, President of the Delaware Apartment Association. The Apartment Angels program will provide transitional rental housing for individuals/families that have been displaced from rental housing (it is not an emergency housing program). The program is intended to help individuals/families in FINANCIAL NEED that have a history of being responsible renters, but became victims of the current economic recession through no fault of their own (loss of employment due to lay-offs, hour reductions, etc.) OR were dramatically and negatively impacted financially by a one-time, life altering event (such as illness/hospitalization, death in the family, military service, etc.). This program is not intended for individuals that have habitual evictions and a history of habitual collection accounts. The intent of the program is to greatly reduce the “normal” financial burden of housing, so that individuals participating in the program will have time to reposition themselves financially, in the workforce, and with regards to their rental housing history. “Although we have a lot of work ahead of us and all details are not finalized, this is an incredibly exciting program and when I was approached by DAA leaders to spearhead this effort, I jumped at the opportunity,” remarked Heather Kamasa, Caring First Chairperson. “Our goal is to partner with emergency housing programs, shelters, and agencies or the public at large that provides assistance in non-permanent housing situations. The Apartment Angels program will then support individuals with the conversion from the emergency or non-permanent housing to transitional housing,” added Kamasa. Any interested governmental agencies/programs, non-profits or charities that provide emergency housing or assist individuals with transition from any non-permanent housing that would like to partner with the DAA Apartment Angels program should contact delawareapartmentassociation@gmail.com and reference Apartment Angels.
